You’ve probably heard that content is king, and although that is true, to have great content you need great keywords.
Why? Because keywords are the foundation of your content.
Knowing what keywords to use will allow you to write content that solves the needs of your audience, which is the type of content that will drive traffic to your website.
If you google the term “types of keywords” you will find hundreds of articles that talk about a dozen or so types of keywords, but for now, let’s focus on only three of them:
Short-tail keywords: These are usually phrases made up of a couple of words that describe something broadly or in a more generic way.

These types of keywords will usually have a lot of search volume, but since they are very generic, it will be difficult to rank for them and will not always drive quality traffic.
Long-tail keywords: These are much more focused phrases that describe something in a more specific way.
💡 Example: “CRM software for insurance agents”
Since these types of keywords are less generic, the search volume will be lower, but they will also drive more qualified traffic to your website. These are the best ones you should use to rank your website content.
Buyer intent keywords: These are similar to the long-tail keywords, but include words or phrases that show purchase intent.
💡 Example: “How much is a CRM software for insurance agents”
The users that search using these types of keywords are in the decision phase, which means they are ready to buy, they just need to figure out who to buy from. These are the perfect keywords you should use on your high-converting pages.
Now that you know what types you need, let’s talk about how to find your actual keywords.
The first step is to define your seed or initial keywords. This one is easy because if you know your product, you already know your keywords. Make a list of your product category, features, and benefits.
Let’s say that you’re selling CRM software. Your product category is your first seed keyword.
Now take a look at your features. Your users can use a sales funnel in your CRM to follow up on their sales leads.
Just with the above statements, we can come up with some seed keywords:
Do Keyword Research
Now that you have a list of your seed keywords, enter them into any keyword research tool to get ideas and suggestions of long-tail and buyer intent keywords.
There are a ton of options, but let me suggest some:
Google Ads Keyword Planner: This is a free option directly from Google. Just create a Google Ads account.
Keyword Tool: This one uses the Google autocomplete feature to provide keyword suggestions. They offer a free option with some limitations.
LowFruits: This is a really good tool that will help you find untapped keyword opportunities.
KatLinks: Get suggestions based on your seed keywords and also see the keywords your competitors are ranking for. Disclaimer: This is my tool, so I may be a little biased about it 😅
From any of these tools, you will get a list of suggested keywords. Ideally, choose the ones that are more likely to drive traffic. You can determine that based on the reported search volume. A higher volume means that more people are searching with those keywords.
Of course, use common sense. If a keyword has a lot of search volume, it doesn’t mean that it’s a good keyword, it may just be too generic.
On the other hand, a keyword with low search volume may be super specific to your product and could drive ready-to-buy users.
Now that you have your keywords, it’s time to create the content. Remember that your keyword types will define the type of content you need to write.
If you are using buyer intent keywords, write content that drives the users to a specific conversion action, whether that is starting a trial, subscribing, or making a purchase.
